Gotham
Gotham
Gotham is a "new American" style restaurant in Greenwich Village opened in 1984 by Jerry Kretchmer, Jeff Bliss, Rick, and Robert Rathe. This restaurant featured the famous chef Alfred Portale. Since I live on East 12th Street I happen to walk past this restaurant quite a lot, although I never had the chance to go inside of it. It was always busy at night and was frequented by some big names, notably Obama, during the time in which he was president. Despite this success, the head chef, Alfred Portale, left the restaurant in 2019. He was then replaced by the chef Victoria Blamely, but then soon after the coronavirus hit, Blamely left the kitchen at Gotham forever. Gotham was reopened in 2021 by the restaurant's former pastry chef Ron Paprocki. Although the menu has not significantly changed, Gotham has been less and less busy, which may be due to its new "modern" look, since it was widely regarded as a more traditional restaurant.
With the help of my mom, dad, and the restaurant critic from a few floors down, I set out to test this restaurant to see if it really had changed as much as critics were making it out to believe. As soon as I stepped into the restaurant, I could sense the change, the once moody lighting had become more bright, and the traditional tables and draping had been replaced with those that were much sleeker. There was a quote from E.B. White in the entryway, and illuminated sheets hanging from the ceiling.
Apart from the apparent aesthetic differences, nothing else stood out to me. I was informed the menu was a pretty basic lunch menu, so we tried to order as many different dishes as we could. We ordered the cauliflower soup, the garden vegetable salad, the yellowfin tuna tartare, and the Kyoto carrot salad for appetizers. The cauliflower soup had excellent presentation and was surprisingly delicious, the garden vegetable salad was a basic salad, the Kyoto carrot salad came with cacao nibs and had an interesting barbeque flavor, but by far, the yellowfin tuna tartare took the cake. The flavors of the tuna were lovely, fresh, and zesty, although the cracker could have been simpler. For our mains, we got the mushroom pappardelle, the green circle chicken breast, the branzino, and for my dad, a well-done burger, which was ordered with much protest from the other members of our table. The chicken was good, although the portion sizes were quite large; the burger was also huge, resembling a fat burger rather than the more popular smash burger; the branzino had good reviews from my mother and downstairs neighbor, and the mushroom pappardelle was a fan favorite (my personal favorite) as it had a very nice savory flavor as well as a large variety of yummy mushrooms.
