Bill and Wilma Mai on dry-land farming
On their farm in Western Kansas, Bill and Wilma Mai use a system called dry-land farming rather than water irrigation systems. In Kansas, where rainfall is scarce, Bill Mai turned to crop rotation in the 1990s. Crop rotation allows the soil to use any moisture left from rain or snow and bank it during a fallow season. With water levels dropping, the Mai family uses this technique of regenerative farming to sustain their crops.
