The Museum tries to do everything it can to show its volunteers that they are valued. Below are details and information on your benefits as a volunteer. You can also reach out to the Volunteer Department if you ever have questions about your benefits!
Each volunteer will receive a personalized “Volunteer Perks Card”. The card will function as your volunteer credentials for NHMU. New volunteers receive a temporary Perks Card at your On-Site Museum Orientation with an expiration date 3 months from the date of orientation. To receive a permanent card, they must log at least 10 hours of service by the end of their second month as a volunteer. Permanent Perks Cards will remain active as long as a volunteer is active, contingent upon a minimum of 10 hours of service a year.
Volunteers get free admission to the Museum—any time! Come again and again to explore all the galleries the Museum has to offer. (Be sure to have your Volunteer Perks Card to get your free admission at the ticket desk!) Any guests accompanying you will need to pay the appropriate admission fee.
In addition to your own free admission, you can bring your family and friends to the Museum for free with Volunteer Guest Passes. You earn 2 passes for every 25 hours of service to the Museum (another reason to keep an accurate record of your service!). You can collect guest passes for hours from the current calendar year and one year prior. When you want to redeem your passes, just contact the Volunteer Department, and we will get them to you! (Be sure to reach out in advance of when you need to use the passes.)
Volunteers get the same discount as staff! When you are checking out, mention that you are a volunteer and show your Volunteer Perks Card and you will receive 20% off your purchase.
Volunteers receive $10 off any Museum Membership! When you are ready to become a Museum Member, just let the Volunteer Department know and we will make sure you get your discount.
Continuing Education Opportunities are scheduled monthly for volunteers. These are great opportunities to keep up to date with the latest discoveries in the world of science. We recognize that growing your natural history knowledge benefits your work as a volunteer of the Museum, so Continuing Education activities that are tailored to volunteers may be counted for volunteer service hours under the “Continuing Education” assignment.

NHMU supports volunteers visiting other museums or educational institutions outside the state of Utah. After you visit an out-of-state museum, come back and report to the Volunteer Board about your experience – what did you see that was fantastic (ie: volunteers, exhibits, programs, etc. – anything that we might use to benefit NHMU) – and NHMU will reimburse your museum admission fee. Your report will also be shared in the volunteer newsletter for everyone to read. (To be eligible, you must have 50 hours of service in the past 12 months; limit one per volunteer per year, until funds run out. We hope to explore as many institutions as we can, so we will only offer one paid admission per institution.)
We have a number of events each year including a recognition dinner for those with 40 or more service hours, a summer picnic for all volunteers and their families, an annual volunteer movie night, and a holiday open house for all volunteers.
All volunteers when starting receive a t-shirt and name tag at On-Site Museum Orientation.
Additional logo wear is available for volunteers to purchase. Long-sleeved button downs with an embroidered NHMU logo are available at cost for $25.00, payable by cash or check (made out to NHMU). They come in both a fitted style and a non-fitted style, and in all sizes. Please let the Volunteer Department know if you are interested in purchasing logo wear.
