Join us for a lively conversation about the state of the Colorado River, water rights in the American West, and the future of water conservation in our region. This event is free and open to the public, but please register by clicking here.
Utah State University Professor Jack Schmidt has devoted nearly 40 years to research of river systems, centered on the Colorado River, its tributaries, and the Grand Canyon. During his academic career — as well as time spent as chief of the U.S. Geological Survey’s Grand Canyon Monitoring and Research Center — he has focused on the relationship of ecosystem health and dams, reservoirs and diversions associated with river management.
He currently serves as the director for the Center for Colorado River Studies, housed in the Quinney College of Natural Resources at USU. The center aims to produce innovative research, teaching and outreach that can help to inform focused decision-making and effective management of the Colorado River and other major rivers of the American Southwest.
This event is co-sponsored by the American West Center, the Wilkes Center and the NHMU.
The time has come – we are looking to recruit many volunteers for our FIRST-EVER Utah Food Festival! Some of you may remember the Chocolate and Cheese Festival from years past. Though this festival was very popular and loved by many, we wanted to make sure to have an event that fit within our museum's mission and strategic goals. With that in mind, the museum has decided to pivot towards a Utah Food Festival - celebrating the cultures, the land, and the people that feed us!
This event will take place on Saturday, May 4 and Sunday, May 5 from 10am-5pm. Due to this pivot, the event IS changing with brand new vendors for the market and new takes on workshops and having an incredible outdoor food vendor serving up Belgium Waffles. We will also be hosting a variety of interesting talks, featuring our fan-favorite Scientist in the Spotlight program, and having other food-related activities and gallery tours take place throughout the weekend. We will also be partnering with the Utah Food Bank to receive food donations from the general public and museum members over the weekend! Jamie Mesrobian, Public Programs Coordinator, is taking the lead for this event.
The deadline to sign up for a Volunteer Slot will be Friday, April 19th. Many of these volunteer slots will go quickly (especially for the Workshops – always a volunteer favorite!), so if you really want to volunteer for the event, make sure to fill out the recruitment form sooner rather than later!

As you have, most likely, seen above we are about to host our FIRST-EVER Utah Food Festival!
We also need your help BEFORE the event! We’re going to have a really fun Dino Diner Activity Zone over the event weekend so that families can have fun crafting whilst learning about different herbivores and carnivores from the paleo-world! In order for this craft to be a success we need a TON of different herbivore and carnivore templates to be cut out before the event. If you’re available and willing to help us out in this way, that would be incredible! We will set you up in a 5th floor conference room with all the supplies you need to be successful!
The deadline to sign up for a Volunteer Slot will be Friday, April 12th.

Join your colleagues in the Museum’s Philanthropy department to kick off the 2024 Gala – scheduled for Thursday evening, June 20. We’ll gather in the staff commons on March 12th at 2:00pm to share event details and how you can be involved in this fun annual event. We’ll also reveal the theme and name of this year’s event and enjoy some thematic sweet treats.
