Porto is the largest city in northern Portugal. Located on the right bank of the Douro River estuary, Porto is one of the oldest European settlements. Its origin dates back nearly 2000 years, when it was an outpost of the Roman Empire. Its Latin name, “Portus Cale”, gave rise to the name “Portugal”.
The Historic Centre of Porto, classified as World Heritage by UNESCO, provides a myriad of monuments and architectural styles from different periods dating back to at least the 12th century. The city of Porto and its river, Douro, cannot be dissociated. The Douro valley, with its lovely terraces of vineyards clinging to the hillsides, is the realm of the famous Port Wine, and offers visitors spectacular views. Porto is the centre of a region with an extraordinary cultural and natural wealth that brings together history, art and nature (sea and mountain), and is a perfect starting point for tourist excursions.
The Conference will take place at the Faculty of Engineering of the University of Porto, Rua Dr. Roberto Frias, 4200-465 Porto, Portugal
