Here are some suggestions for 5th grade -
*The science activities- must be approved by parents and /or guardians before conducting😊*
Reading-
Whatever you have them read- always remind them to connect to the story in any way they can-
Do they know people like the characters?
Would they want to know or be friends with people who are like any of the characters? Why or why not?
Have they ever been in similar situations that occur in the book?
Have they ever visited a place similar to the book setting?
Would they want to visit a place similar to the setting?
• Read a children’s book that has been made into a movie- compare and contrast the book and the movie using a Venn diagram or write a compare and contrast essay.
• Read a book on your reading level- compare and contrast two characters from the book. - (how they behave, what they say, and their physical features)
• Read two books – compare the characters, settings, problems, types of characters, resolutions.
• Summarize the t.v. shows, books, and/or movies you watch. -
• Discuss the show, book, or movie using a story map.
Vocabulary-
• Go on a vocabulary search- locate words you do not know – (words you read and/or hear) write them down, look them up, use then in a sentence, and create pictures to go along with each word –
• Teach those knew words to your siblings and/or parents in a fun way-
• Create a vocabulary book- Words I learned during my time away from school! You can create a much better title 😉
• Remember to create vivid sentences by using those adjective and adverbs.
Spelling-
• Have someone give you a spelling test using the new vocabulary words you learn.
Science- create a slideshow(s) about the topics we have studied- If possible- research more on these topics and/or teach what you have learned to a sibling.
Ecosystems- go outside and identify producers, consumers, and decomposers.
Observe organisms in their environments- How are they using the biotic- (living factors) and the abiotic (non-living factors)?
Watch national geographic channel.
Solar system- Where is the sun rising in relation to your home- in the front, back, or side of your home? Mark your shadow at different times of the day- how does it change? Look at the night sky- search for constellations. Make a chart of the hours of daylight- sunrise sun set. Observe the budding of a tree or plant. How long does it take for it to open? https://spaceplace.nasa.gov/en/search/kids/- This is NASA’S web page- explore
Sound and light- conduct sound absorption experiments, light absorption experiments. On a sunny day- feel a variety of objects outside- noting the differences in how hot they feel, - tree, rock, (vehicle the metal, wheel, mirror) driveway, anything else in your yard.
Force and motion- calculate your speed S= distance divided by time- Go outside -measure off a distance- 15-20 feet (you decide your distance).
Have someone time how long it takes you to walk, skip, run, crawl, etc. that distance.
Divide your distance by your time and see how fast you moved.
Create an experiment to test friction- select a variety of surfaces- time your car/ball (whatever object you select) on each surface.
Be creative😊
Test the speed of a variety of balls rolling down an incline- Basketball, soccer ball, baseball, softball etc...
Make sure you control your experiment- only change the variable you are testing- EVERYTHING else remain the same.
Please use our Dragon Links to access our online programs: https://sites.google.com/gc-k12.org/greenlinks/home_1
• As a class we have used -Quizziz and readworks.org. The students know how to use these. I will assign practice on these two links. The assignments will show up in their google classroom email. They know how to do this. These WILL NOT be graded- just practice for the students😉 So, if you do not have internet access- IT IS O.K. do not worry 😊
• Epic login instruction (this is new- we have not used this yet)
• Log in with your class code pwk8080
• If this does not work- don’t worry. As I said we have never used it, so I am not
• Moby Max-User name- firstname.lastname@gcs Password- student id#
A few students have logins for Headsprout- They know how to log in. This is a reading practice site. This is also on the Dragon Links page.
Cook, learn to double or reduce a recipe, play board games, create board games, learn to do laundry, take a walk (when it warms up) and learn to identify trees, insects, birds, plants, etc...
Be safe!
