Meet the Writer

Hello, my name is, Jonah Chizinsky, and I am the sports writer for The Gateway Gazette. I have created the sports section to inform you on the sports events that occur with our very own Gateway Sharks! I will be writing about both basketball teams, and the volleyball teams later on in the year. Enjoy!

5th-6th Grade Basketball Game,

December 20, 2017

By Jonah Chizinsky

On Wednesday, December 20th, Gateway’s 5th and 6th grade boys basketball team had an outstanding and exciting performance against the Salesian school. Small forward, Ryan Hamdy, thinks that the team's performance tonight was much better than in previous games considering how the team had to put up a fight and came up with an astonishing score of 34 to 17! Ryan also believes that a big part of this win was the team's running coach, Steve Wolfman’s drills that are worked on in practices. Along with Ryan thinking this, power forward Nico Jones believes that, “the key to tonight’s win was sticking together as a team and not giving up.” I think that those are both very deep answers coming from two of the teams star players.

Along with being positive and focused, the entire team is also very aggressive and gifted with athleticism and basketball. Early in the game, center/power forward, Flynn Rorty, put on a show with many rebounds against one of Salesian’s best players and put up at least a total of 10 points. While Flynn is rebounding, aggressive, and focused, point guard Cliff Chesnut also played very hard and positively. Cliff picked up a ton of assists to shooting guard Jonah Chizinsky, forward/power forward Aaron Jacobs, and all-around guard, Rio Wolfman. Chesnut also dropped 13 points. Also, small forward, Emmet Helvie, picked up his first points of the season and collected some good steals and rebounds. More highlights of this evening's game included point guard Noah Luksich collecting 4 steals and crossing up at least 3 people, August Swanson’s assists and rebounds, Ozzie’s shots, and power forward Jake Smith getting 5 fast breaks and absolutely zooming by the opponents players at multiple parts of the game.

Overall, the 5th and 6th grade Sharks have had an amazing season so far. They've kept their winning streak strong with their amount of effort and skills in this game.
