How Did You Choose Your High School?
Many 8th graders are wondering which high school they should choose for the next four years of their life and it can be a really hard decision for the student and their parent(s)/guardian. I checked in with three alumni that graduated in Santa Cruz last year and asked them how they chose their their high school. I also asked them, in their opinion, what was the big difference between middle school and high school.

All of the students I interviewed said that one big reason they chose their high school was due to friends attending the same school. They also talked about the academics at the school and the activities you can do on campus. Kids also liked being able to have lunch off campus. Sports was another thing that helped students make their choice. All in all the choices came down to friends, the overall academic program and sports. The kids I interviewed said the main differences between middle school and high school is that there’s more homework in high school, it's more strict, there are a lot more people and there's more responsibility. One thing that the kids liked is that you have more independence in high school. It might sound really hard but if you study, do your homework, and work hard, you'll get A's and B's in your chosen high school.

The 5/6 winners of the Gateway Spelling be are Jasper Garret and Grace Jones. For the 7/8 category, Konish Bhattacharya took first place and Rider McCormick took second. All of our winners will be moving on to the County Spelling Bee on January 27 at UCSC. Wish them luck if you see them around the campus!

Need Some Social Justice In Your Life?
The 2018 Women's March is coming up on January 20th, with more than 200 marches planned around the world! Last year there were more than 4 million people marching for justice. Unfortunately there is widespread discrimination against women, but there's still much to fight for and activists have high hopes for this coming march. The March is taking place downtown Santa Cruz from 10 am–1 pm. For more details visit the march site here.
