Singing For the Gold

On January 18, 2018, millions of people around the globe will be tuned in to watchThe Grammy Awards. The Grammys is an award ceremony presented by The Recording Academy to recognize achievement in the (mainly) English-language music industry. The Grammys were first held May 4, 1959, 58 years ago, as a Gramophone Award, and have now grown to be one of the most popular award ceremonies on TV. Last year 24.95 million people stopped what they were doing to watch the Grammys.

The Grammy winners are selected by The Academy's voting members who are all involved in the creative and technical processes of recording. The members participate in (1) the nominating process that determines the five finalists in each category, and (2) the final voting process which determines the Grammy winners.

The Grammys are extremely important to the music world. In the year after grabbing Grammy No. 1, Bruno Mars' average nightly gross swelled from $130,000 to $202,000 (+55%); multi-instrumentalist Esperanza Spalding swung from $20,000 to $32,000 (+60%); and pop-country superstar Taylor Swift surged from $125,000 to $600,000 (+380%).

This year, JAY-Z leads the pack with eight nominations, including nods for album of the year, record of the year, song of the year and best rap album. Kendrick Lamar follows with seven nods, and Bruno Mars is right behind with six. SZA is 2018's most Grammy-nominated woman with five nominations. I can’t wait to see the Grammys!
