Independent reading is students reading self-selected books for a sustained period of time.
In independent reading, students read silently or softly (individually or in pairs) typically selecting their own texts but sometimes with teacher guidance. Independent reading can occur simultaneously with literacy centers. When implementing independent reading for the first time, the teacher presents several mini-lessons on how to select books (An organized book collection also helps students select appropriate books). While the students are reading independently, the teacher holds one-on-one conferences, guided reading groups, or engages in literature study. Students are held accountable for their learning.
