For the 25-26 school year, GISD staff will have access to a library of available software and digital tools that are approved for use in Garland ISD called LearnPlatform. Within this library, information will be provided to ensure all users understand what tools are provided by the district and tools that are optional to use in the classroom due to no data collection.
Protecting our students' privacy is more critical than ever. Texas House Bill 18, also known as the Securing Children Online Through Parental Empowerment (SCOPE) Act, was enacted to safeguard our students from harmful, deceptive, or unfair trade practices associated with digital services. This legislation mandates enhanced online privacy protections, limits access to harmful content, and empowers parents with additional rights and tools to keep their children safe.
As educators, it is our responsibility to ensure that we comply with these regulations and protect our students' digital privacy. One of the key components of HB 18 is the requirement for schools to minimize data collection on students and ensure that any digital tools used are secure and approved by the district. This is where the importance of using district-provided tools comes into play.
District-provided tools are vetted for compliance with HB 18, ensuring that they meet the necessary privacy and security standards. By using these tools, we can guarantee that our students' data is protected and that we are adhering to the legal requirements set forth by the state. Additionally, these tools often come with built-in features that help monitor and restrict access to inappropriate content, further safeguarding our students' online experiences.
