All Escalante High School students will be proficient readers by graduation.
We CAN do it.
Read a paragraph from your book of choice. (approximately 100 words)
0-1 errors = Easy
2-3 errors = Just Right
5 or more errors = Challenging
Reading Fluency Progress Monitoring
Students begin their Language Arts class period with approximately 10 minutes of oral reading practice with a partner. Students read passages appropriate for their skill level and based on their personal literacy goals.
Cold Read - first reading of new passage, unfamiliar to student
Hot Read - second reading of passage, now familiar to student
wcpm - words correct per minute
Students then graph the data collected so that they can visualize their progress and know when it's time to move up a level. The example shown here is an 8th Grader's graph.
Grade Level Reading Fluency Rates
By 7th and 8th Grade: 185-199 wcpm
12th Grade and Higher: 200-250 wcpm
Reading fluency rates, unless very far below grade level averages, are not as important as students' comprehension of text. Understanding the vocabulary, main idea, and details of a passage is key and a strong focus of our daily reading practice.
