The topic-based course has a communicative approach. Students learn the language and culture in integrated ways, based on topics including everyday activities, personal and social life and the world around us.

Assessment
External assessment – 75%
paper 1 – listening (35 minutes) – 25%
students listen to a number of recordings and answer questions and comprehension (30 marks)
paper 2 – reading (1 hour 15 minutes) – 25%
students read a number of texts and answer questions testing comprehension (36 marks)
paper 4 – writing (1 hour 15 minutes) – 25%
students read a number of texts and answer questions testing comprehension (36 marks)
Internally assessed/externally moderated – 25%
paper 3 – speaking (15 minutes) – 25%
students respond in the target language to three tasks (45 marks)
