3hr Pedal Kart Challenge
A UWCSEA community event
We are planning to create a UWCSEA-hosted event that combines community building, service fundraising, problem-solving, creativity, technical knowledge and fun.
Pedal Kart GP will be held annually, open to all UWCSEA East and Dover students and their families.
Register your interest now, and get involved. This year it's just East and Dover, next year? Who knows how many might join?
Details
Date: Saturday 1st June 2024
Time: 0800 - 1200
Location: Dover Campus
Looking for: 2 teams (10 students per team)
Innovation everywhere
There are 4 pedal karts, 2 for East and 2 for Dover. Each Kart will need the following teams:
Riders
With each rider completing a 20-minute run, each kart would need a team of 10 riders. Of course, riders can always do multiple runs, but we're looking for as much opportunity as possible. Are you up for the challenge?
Mechanical Engineers
Each Kart will need to be in tip-top condition. Aligned wheels, toe in or toe out, gear ratios, perfect ergonomic postures for riding, brakes that work. Mechanics will need to put the Kart together and keep them together up until the end of the race, yes, that means the pit crew too. Can you fix it?
Electrical Engineers
Each Kart will need a tracker to count the laps, it will need a radio to allow the riders to communicate with the pit crews, the Kart will need lights, lighting and cameras to record the race. Karts will need Speedometers and something to track the distance travelled. Can you add a music system too?
Aesthetic Designers
The Karts are a little boring to look at, bring in the designers. These people can jazz it up and give it novelty and an identity. What if it rains?
Aerodynamic Engineers
Looking good and pedalling fast is one thing, but if the Kart can't peel through the air, that's just wasting energy. The karts will need to be made streamlined, remember your Derby Racers? Well, now you have a big one.
Textile Engineers
It's hard work being a member of a Pedal Kart team, why be uncomfortable whilst you're working so hard? Kart teams will need to design their brand and wear it with pride. There's an opportunity to create your team's image here.
What we would like
The aim is to use this event as a platform in which support UWCSEA’s four strategic commitments:
Exceptional People and Teams
The cross-campus, cross-school event will provide an opportunity to draw from our wealth of staff expertise regardless of department, job or status.
Immersive Learning
The lead-up time to the event will create space for students and families to get involved in the design, engineering, training and organising of the grand prix.
Sense of Belonging
Creating an ongoing event allows our community to build an inclusive culture of taking part and raises the UWC spirit within the college.
Curiosity and Exploration
The low-stakes challenge enables the community to become involved in their own way, eventually inviting more teams to design and engineer their own entries.
