The Ethnosprouts Project
The Ethnosprouts Project
Singapore is considered a highly developed country with a high standard of living, and food security is something many would take for granted in this prosperous nation, especially with its renowned food culture and cheap meals. However, food insecurity is still a prevalent issue in many demographics in Singapore, often disregarded and invisible to most.
As a country with a large population density and limited agricultural land, in 2023, Singapore imports more than 90% of our food supply, especially among lower-income groups. This makes Singapore vulnerable to global market fluctuations and supply chain disruptions.
Furthermore, out of Singapore’s population of 6 million, nearly 300,000 are considered migrant domestic workers, referring to workers primarily from neighbouring countries such as Indonesia, the Philippines, and Bangladesh. Though there is no official poverty line, about 10% of the population lives in severe poverty, with hunger being a problem.
The Ethnosprouts Project is a youth-led initiative to facilitate and raise nutrient-packed vegetables for donation to various organisations or beneficiaries. We hope to create an impact on vulnerable groups in society, particularly migrant workers and the elderly, by providing them with healthy vegetables that suit their tastes and diets.
We hope our message and mission can spread nationwide and encourage other like-minded youth to start their own gardening projects. Land is a scarce resource in Singapore, but through a collaborative effort and creative urban farming, we can make a difference in the lives of those in need.
