The project is a regional initiative of the Carbon-Schuylkill-Luzerne (CSL) County STEM Ecosystem and one of the components of the Ecosystem’s comprehensive professional development plan. The Ecosystem’s plan was modeled after the professional development plan of the SHINE afterschool program. A total of 25 educators, including classroom and out-of-school-time teachers, counselors, and administrators, will be recruited to participate in a six-day program scheduled from December through May during the 2018-19 academic year. The program will focus on the Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics career cluster, as well as the Manufacturing, Information Technology, and Transportation, Distribution & Logistics career clusters as they relate to the Advanced Manufacturing/technology industry cluster. Participants will visit the worksites of local manufacturers to observe their operations and work applications of STEM, see demonstrations of emerging technologies, and interact with management on the job skills required. They will also observe the labs in career and technical centers, tinker in a makerspace, and learn about career pathways and regional job trends. Instruction by a trained facilitator will prepare the educators to transition their observations to project-based activities aligned with the PA Academic Standards for Career Education and Work.
