July 1, 2022 Issue
Greetings GAA Community,
This will be my last article after spending 8 wonderful years at GAA. It really has been a great 8 years, part of a caring community.
I have greatly enjoyed the time I have spent with your children.
I hope that you and your families have a wonderful summer break.
My last piece of advice is that you read with your children every chance you get. We know that their time with books is the best indicator of their success in the future.
Stay well.
Sincerely,
Mike Hopaluk
Elementary Principal
We have had a wonderful and busy academic year in class 2F. We have just completed our final unit of Inquiry “Where We Are in Place and Time.” Students inquired into exploration. They investigated the different frontiers for explorations such as ocean and space, then considered the necessary technology needed for safe exploration. Students investigated how technology has developed and how large teams are necessary to undertake any exploration endeavor. Students came to understand that exploration can look very different depending on context. They inquired into the positives and negatives of different types of exploration.
Pupils explored space and considered our galaxy and the wider universe. We contemplated what is known and how we came to know this. We also considered what is yet to be discovered and how people may go about learning more. We decided if we’d like to become explorers. As part of this unit we visited the Planetarium to learn more about distances in space from the 360 viewing ceiling.
During this unit students explored our planet and its oceans. They investigated the depths of the Mariana trench, inquired into the special technology needed for such a journey, discussed the pros and cons of deep sea exploration, considered the technology needed for such an investigation and learned about a variety of interesting species. As part of this investigation we visited the National Aquarium for a guided visit of their facility.
Students shared what they have learned and deepened their understanding of ocean creatures which provided great links to our “Sharing the Planet” and “Nonfiction Reading” units.
The students of 2F have had a great year. They have learned, grown and improved so much over the course of this academic year. We wish them all the best in Grade 3!
