Welcome to the Department of Linguistics at the University of California, Los Angeles! We are excited that you have chosen our program to continue your path in linguistics! This site is designed to prepare you for your first quarter and introduce you to the way UCLA operates. Please make sure to read through the contents of this site carefully as it covers much of the information you need to know as a UCLA graduate student, including academic/degree program, student resources and available services, financial information, and getting settled. Some sections have subpages, so please make sure you don't miss those!
If at any time you need clarification, more information, or have a question that is not answered here, please do not hesitate to contact the department's Graduate Student Affairs Officer (Grad SAO), Jennifer Banawa, at jennifer@humnet.ucla.edu. The Grad SAO will be assisting you with the administrative aspects of navigating the degree program, and department and University policy.
Beginning in the Summer and leading to the start of Fall Quarter, you will receive a large amount of information from the University and the Department stating deadlines, information, orientation, opportunities, etc. It is your responsibility to read these notices, observe the deadlines, and take any action that is required. This is especially important for items such as award acceptances, immunization requirements, and visa orientation. It is recommended to create a folder in your inbox, a computer folder, or cloud storage to store this information for quick reference in the future.
We understand that you will be taking a number of actions and going through many changes as you prepare to begin at UCLA. For now, please be sure to focus on submitting official FINAL transcripts (if not done so already) fulfilling the immunization requirements, and preparing to establish California residency (if eligible)!
The Department’s orientation is planned to be held on Wednesday, September 24, in the Linguistics Department’s Conference Room (2122 Campbell Hall). Orientation starts in the morning, usually 9AM. The Grad SAO will follow-up once an exact start time is established. The tentative agenda is:
Orientation session led by our Director of Graduate Studies (DGS)
Meet individually in the afternoon with the DGS to discuss the classes you’ll enroll in for the Fall, as well as any other questions you would like to ask.
Please reference the table below for important deadlines. Some specific dates for 2025 are not yet available and tend to be published in the Summer. Fall 2025 deadlines are typically made available by the University in early Summer (late June, early July). Be sure to check back periodically for updates on actions. The full UCLA term calendar is available to view on the Registrar's Office website.
