A = Superior Achievement
B = Satisfactorily demonstrated potentiality for professional achievement in field of study
C = Passed the course but did not do work indicative of potential for professional achievement in field of study
F = Fail
S = Satisfactory (achievement at grade B level or better)
Does not count in computing the GPA
U = Unsatisfactory
Students receive neither units nor degree credit for a grade of U
I = Incomplete (see below)
IP = In Progress
For courses that extend over more than one term. An IP is assigned at the end of the first term. When the final term has been completed the IP designation will be replaced with a letter grades.
DR = Deferred Report
A Deferred Report (DR) grade may be assigned when the when the student’s work is complete but the instructor cannot assign a grade because of disciplinary proceedings or other problems. For graduate students, the Division of Graduate Education's Dean sets a deadline by which the DR lapses to an F if the issue is not resolved or a grade is not assigned. The DR is changed to a grade, or perhaps to an incomplete, when the instructor provides written confirmation that the situation is resolved. The DR grade is not included in determining the grade-point average.
NR = No Report (Instructor forgot to submit the grades on time)
You may request an incomplete when your work is of passing quality but is incomplete for good cause. This is to be done before the final exam or paper is due and it is at the instructor’s discretion whether or not to assign an “I” grade. It is the student’s responsibility to discuss with the instructor the possibility of receiving an Incomplete as opposed to a nonpassing grade. Once an “I” grade is entered, students must resolve the Incomplete grade before the first day of instruction of the corresponding term in the subsequent academic year. Graduate students must submit the remaining coursework at least 30 days prior to the first day of instruction of the term, and the instructor must submit the final earned grade by the first day of the term (e.g., for a Fall 2025 quarter Incomplete, students must complete coursework by late August of the following academic year [August 2026] and the instructor must submit the grade in late September [September 2026].
