Students often wonder how to list their title when they update their professional profile, online presence, or order new business cards. Please note that the terms "Student" and "Candidate" are not interchangeable. While in some cases the proper title is of little relevance, it is useful to use the correct title as it will convey your proper stage in the program.
You are a Doctoral Student until you advance to candidacy after successfully defending your dissertation proposal (oral qualifying exam). When you pass your proposal defense, you are then a Doctoral Candidate.
You are a Masters Student up until the very end of your program. You are only a Masters Candidate when you advance to candidacy for your degree. Advancement to candidacy occurs only during your final quarter.
