FAQ

Below is a list of the most Frequently Asked Questions about the registration process.

REGISTER May 21 - 24

These FAQs are to be used in conjunction with information in STEPS ONE, TWO, THREE and FOUR, including Registration Troubleshooting. They should not be considered a shortcut or a resource to be used instead of thoroughly reviewing all information on this site. Students who carefully  prepare for registration by reading through all STEPS, using the Shopping Cart in advance, and registering as soon as their appointment allows will have the best chance of getting into their preferred courses.

Where is the Schedule of Classes?

Updated Course Timetable

Where can I find my registration appointment?

You will find your individual registration start time in OrangeAbroad > Registration Appointment and Instructions

You can also find appointments in MySlice > Enrollment Dates. Strasbourg appointments are on the Flex Long Classes line.

All Strasbourg students’ online registration appointments expire at 2:00 pm Eastern US time on Friday, May 24.

I won’t have access to a computer when my registration appointment starts. What should I do?

You should get online to register as soon as possible once your appointment starts. This will give you the best chance of getting your preferred course schedule. If you do not register during the online registration period May 21-24, you may find that your first-choice courses are full when our office emails you during the break between semesters to complete your registration administratively.

I’m a visiting student. Where do I find my SUID number?

Sign in to OrangeAbroad. Your SUID number is located under Applicant Home > Profile Tab (left side).

If you cannot locate it, contact your International Program Advisor at syrstrasbourg@syr.edu. You will need to provide some personal identification information (name, birthdate, SSN) in order for us to release this number to you.

How do visiting students activate their Net IDs?

Follow the instructions at the NetID Self-Service portal.

Help! I’ve forgotten my Net ID and/or password. What should I do?

Go to the NetID Self-Service portal.

If you've received email to your SU email account (it's definitely been sent!), your NetID is what precedes @syr.edu in your email address.

I have an Advising, Bursar or other registration hold on my record. What should I do?

Our office cannot remove holds. You must resolve the hold with the office that has placed the hold. In MySlice > Student Home > Holds, click on the link of the hold to find contact info.

How do I add classes to my Shopping Cart in MySlice?

Review the Enrollment Guide (page 3)

I don’t remember the courses I listed on my Course Preference Form. Where can I find them?

You received an email with your responses quite immediately after submitting the Course Preference Form.

May I register for a course that I didn’t list on my Course Preference Form?

Yes, as long as you are eligible for it (for example, meet any prerequisite). Syracuse Abroad recommends you discuss any changes to your academic plan with your academic advisor(s) if you have questions for how a course will count toward your degree progress. If you plan to take an online class through main campus or College of Professional Studies, you must wait for that registration appointment to be available and our office must be aware that you are planning to participate in a course not offered abroad. Any registration that does not follow this process may be administratively dropped.

Can I register for classes that meet back-to-back?

Yes, for all of our Center offerings. If you are also taking classes at a local university, the Strasbourg Academic Office will help ensure that your final schedule builds in enough time to get to/from all your classes.

What if I want to take two classes that overlap in meeting times?

You cannot register for classes when there is a time conflict. You need to be available for the entire meeting time of each class. Select the course you most want to take.

REGISTERING

When should I register?

As soon as your appointment allows! The earlier you get online to register, the better your chances of getting into your first-choice courses.

Appointments for SU Strasbourg students start at noon Eastern time on Tuesday, May 21.

Find your individual registration start time in OrangeAbroad > Registration Appointment and Instructions

You can also find appointments in MySlice > Enrollment Dates. Strasbourg appointments are on the Flex Long line.

How do I register?

Log in to MySlice > Enrollment > Enroll/Drop/Adjust Classes. You can find detailed instructions on how to register in STEP THREE.

Do not SEARCH for classes! Do not use Schedule Builder! These are by far the most common errors made during online registration for Syracuse Abroad classes!

Instead, enter the five-digit class number associated with each class in the Schedule of Classes (see next question).

Where do I find the 5-digit class number I need to register for a class?

You can find the five-digit class numbers in the first column of the updated Schedule of Classes

There are no class numbers for some courses (including CAS 200 and internship courses IPA 470 and PSC 471). How can I register without a class number?

How many courses should/can I register for?

All Strasbourg students must register for at least 12 credits to meet the minimum required by the program and France immigration.

During the initial registration period, the system will prevent you from registering for more than 17 credits. Please contact cjenn101@syr.edu if you need to register for more than 17 credits asap. Requests made during online registration will not be immediately available.

A course that I requested on my CPF no longer appears on the schedule. Why?

On occasion, a course may be cancelled due to insufficient demand. Cancelled courses are listed in STEP ONE: Review Updates.

There are no cancelled courses for Fall 2024!

Why is a course listed with the correct title but the wrong departmental prefix?

Check the Schedule of Classes. If the class number is highlighted in grey, this is a cross-listed course, meaning the course can be registered under more than one subject prefix. For such courses, we provide a single class number for each subject listing to prevent you from being closed out of the course under one subject while seats are still available under another. You will be able to correct your registration once you get to Strasbourg so that it reflects the subject prefix you want or need.

Why can't I enroll in a class if I can see there are spaces available?

What should I do if a course is full?

Select an alternative course. Be sure that you are registered for a minimum of 12 credits.

If you are closed out of a course that is fulfilling a specific academic requirement which cannot be met by another course AND which you must take this semester in order to graduate on time, you should document this need by having your home college submit the Academic Need Verification Form. We will make every effort to meet your confirmed academic need.

I’m getting an error message when I try to register for a sixth class.

During online registration for Strasbourg, students are limited to a maximum of 17 credits.

Please note that if you intend to register for any credit amount over 19, those credits count toward your total semester credits and are subject to additional per-credit tuition charges. For detailed information, see the latest Tuition, Fees, and Related Policies Bulletin.

I am getting an error message that says a requisite is not met for the class I want to take. What should I do?

If you do not have the background needed for a class (see prerequisites in the course description), the system may not allow you to enroll, and you should select another course. Do not contact the instructor to request permission to register during early registration; priority goes to students who meet the prerequisite. If you believe you are adequately prepared for this class, email cjenn101@syr.edu with documentation supporting your request.

I’m getting an error message that I don’t understand. Why can’t I register?

If you can’t register for a course that is currently in your Shopping Cart, first try removing it from your cart and then re-add it. If you continue to have problems, review Troubleshooting and this video on Common Enrollment Error Messages. If this doesn’t address your problem, email Christi Jennings with the error message you receive (a screenshot is always helpful!).

AFTER REGISTRATION

What should I do if I didn’t get into a first-choice course?

Do NOT email the professor of the class or the SU department! They cannot waive you into a class.

If you are closed out of a course that you believe you must take this semester in order to graduate on time...

I want to make a change to my schedule. When can I do this?

Make any changes you want during the online registration period. Once early registration ends on Friday, May 24 at 2:00 pm Eastern time, you will have to wait until the schedule adjustment period in Strasbourg to make changes. You will receive more information on academic deadlines and the process for schedule adjustment during Orientation.

Why was a course dropped from my schedule?

Our office may remove you from any class for which you are deemed ineligible (e.g. don’t meet the prerequisite or enrolled in a main campus or College of Professional Studies class). Syracuse Abroad makes every attempt to communicate and notify students via their syr.edu email, so be sure to regularly read your syr.edu messages!
