Determine Your French Level
VISITING STUDENTS:
If you are unsure of your language level or how Syracuse language courses compare with those at your home school, share Strasbourg course syllabi with an advisor in your school's languages department to determine the level appropriate for you. Request French course syllabi from your international program advisor.
ALL MATRICULATED SYRACUSE UNIVERSITY STUDENTS:
Most students need to take the French placement exam to figure out which FRE class level is appropriate.
Foreign language placement instructions are in Answers (remember to log in for best info).
To access the exam, log into MySlice: Advising > Placement Exams > Take Placement Exams
The purpose of the online placement exam is to identify your language level and allow you to select the appropriate course.
Even if you've never taken French, you must complete this exam in order to register!
Unsure of your placement exam results?
MySlice > Advising > Placement Exams > Placement Exam Scores
Only students that have already taken the placement exam or have taken a French class at SU are excused! This includes native and heritage speakers of French and students with French AP, IB, or other college-level or transfer credit.
You should have done this already... if you haven't, do it NOW!
ALL Students at Beginning (100) or Intermediate (200) levels:
If you are at one of these levels, you take a 4-credit language instruction course: FRE 101,102, 201, or 202.
ALL Students at an Advanced level (300 or 400):
If you have already completed four semesters of college-level French (or are at that level of proficiency), you are eligible to take one or more of the following 3-credit courses:
FRE 300.1 - French Cinema vs. Hollywood
FRE 325 - Junior Language Usage
FRE 447 - France from the Revolution to the Great War (also offered as cross-listing HST 447)
Admitted to a partner university program at the Université de Strasbourg? You can fulfill your language requirement by taking French language instruction OR content courses taught in French (EX: political science, history, math, French literature, etc.) at the local university.
Note that you do NOT register for partner university courses online. You will do this abroad!
