REGISTER FOR ITALIAN

VISITING STUDENTS:  If you have some exposure to or past study of Italian and are unsure what Syracuse course to take, share the Italian course syllabi available in Blackboard with an advisor in the languages department of your home school. They should be able to help determine the appropriate level. Note that all students' ITA registrations will be confirmed in Florence with assessment during the first week of classes.

ALL MATRICULATED SYRACUSE UNIVERSITY STUDENTS -- including native and heritage speakers of Italian and students with Italian  AP, IB, or other college-level or transfer credit -- must take the online Italian placement survey/exam, accessed through MySlice. The only exceptions are if:

• You have already taken one or more ITA classes at Syracuse, in which case you should take the next course in sequence; or 

• You have already taken SU’s Italian online placement exam, in which case you should take the course level in which you were placed.

You should have done this already; if not, do it NOW!!  The purpose of the online placement exam is to identify your language level, allowing you to register for the appropriate Florence course. 

• Instructions on accessing this exam are available online. To access the exam, log into MySlice > Advising > Placement Exams > Take Placement Exams 

ALL Students at Beginning (100) or Intermediate (200) levels:

If you are at one of these levels, you take a 4-credit language instruction course: ITA 101, 102, 201, or 202.

• These courses meet on MW or on TTh from 8:30 to 10:45 or from 11:00 to 1:15. 

  • Don't worry: there will be a coffee break, and at least 1 out of 4 classes will be spent on a site visit somewhere in Florence, learning Italian while using it "on the go".  This is not your stereotypical language class; there are lots of cultural activities and we make learning Italian fun!

    • • • Obviously the 11am time slot fills up fast, but this is a very energizing class (did we mention the coffee?) and it will get your day off to a good start.

        • Any change of section has to be done in Florence and is handled by the Academic Office.

  • Sign up for a time-slot using the 5-digit course code found on the Schedule. We will divide you into classes of no more than 10-12 students.

• You may opt to also take a 2-credit companion course to supplement your language acquisition and experiential learning: ITA 117 or 118. These classes meet on Monday/Wednesday afternoons.  Also a lot of fun!

Students at an Advanced level (300 or 400):

If you have already completed four semesters of college-level Italian (or are at that level of proficiency), you are eligible to take one or both of the following 3-credit courses:

ITA 325 – Advanced Language Usage

ITA 421 – Patterns of Modernity in 20th Century Italian Literature

Students in the Intensive Language Program:

You will take both of the following courses for a total of 7 credits:

• ITA 380 - Intensive Italian instruction at the University of Florence. Classes meet at the Centro di Cultura per Stranieri five times a week, Monday-Friday mornings. Assessment in Florence will determine which level of ITA 380 you will take. 

• ITA 315 - Italian Practicum I. This course is held at SU Florence and runs in parallel to the course at the Centro, providing additional support as necessary to fine tune your language skills and prepare you for the final examination. The schedule for this course will be confirmed after registration has closed.
