History
San Chong Xianse Temple is the oldest temple in Sanchong District and was built in 1755 AD. "Xianse" refers to the God of Agriculture, Shen Nong. During the early period, the Taiwanese made a living by practicing agriculture. Therefore, many farmers would come here to worship for a good harvest. "Xianse Temple" was its name during the Japanese colonial period, while locals also called it the "Wugu Xiandi Temple." Since the development of agriculture became more prosperous, this temple has been crowded with more worshipers. Initially, this temple was a simple but shabby building with an unstable roof made of grass.
However, after renovation, it became a bigger temple consisting of a front hall, a rear hall, and east and west side chambers. In addition, what makes it unique is the concept of "Duì Chǎng Zuò" (對場作). Two artisans were separately commissioned to design and create each section. After completion, they competed with each other. Artisans from different schools have distinct styles. For example, the "Left Azure Dragon" was crafted by artisans in the Zhangzhou style, while the "Right White Tiger" was designed by artisans in the Quanzhou style. This architectural approach showcases simplicity, antiquity, and authenticity, serving not only as a platform for artisans to challenge each other but also as a means of passing down their skills and traditions.
