GPA

The term GPA (Grade Point Average) refers to the number that is calculated using grades earned in all eligible courses. Colleges look at your GPA to see if you're ready for their academic challenges. A higher GPA often means you've worked hard and understood the material, making you a stronger candidate for admission and scholarships.

WHEN

• 9th and 10th graders: GPAs are posted only at the end of the year

• 11th and 12th grade:  GPAs are posted at the end of the semester.

Good to Know

• RISD calculates all students’ GPAs to the sixth decimal place.

• Courses taken in Junior High are not included in GPA

• Courses taken in Summer School will be included in the first semester GPA, posted in January.

Quality Points

RISD Courses and Quality Points

• AP Courses – 10 points

• OnRamps Courses – 10 points

• Dual Credit Courses – 10 points

• Advanced (formerly Pre-AP) Courses – 5 points

• Honors Courses – 5 points

Quality points are awarded after successful completion of each semester.  Students must earn a passing grade (70%) to be awarded quality points.  

Quality points are added for GPA purposes only and are not reflected in the student grades on the transcript (AAR).

100 Point weighted gpa

• The 100 pt. weighted GPA, viewable in Focus, is the official GPA listed on the RISD transcript.

• All courses listed on the transcript that count for graduation credit are included in the Weighted 100 Pt GPA calculation.  Local courses are not included.

4.0 Unweighted gpa

• The 4.0 unweighted GPA, viewable in Focus, is to help with Direct Admissions or scholarships and is not an official GPA listed on the RISD transcript.

• All courses listed on the transcript that count for graduation credit are included in the Unweighted 4.0 GPA calculation.  Local courses are not included.

Top 10%

• If you are in the top 10% of your class, RISD will notify you for purposes of automatic admission.

        • FOCUS - Unofficial letter is uploaded in FOCUS

        • Greenlight Locker - Official letter is available for student to send to college/universities.

• Timing of Notifications:  RISD shall notify students in the top 10% of their class at the end of the junior year, at the end of the fall semester of the senior year, and again at the end of the senior year. 

• Top 10% Letters include the following information:

        • Class Rank - Your official class rank

        • Class Size-  The specific number of students in your class

Please note:  Top 10% letters will be viewable to only Junior and Senior students in the top 10% of their class.
