College Application Deadlines
Most large universities have fall deadlines before winter break, but some colleges accept applications as late as summer 2027.
Try to apply early! Applying early can increase your chances of receiving scholarships and financial aid. Some money is given on a first-come, first-served basis, so don’t wait until the last minute.
How to Apply
Most Berkner students use one of two main college applications. When possible, we recommend using the Common App because you can use one application to apply to multiple colleges.
The Common App lets you use one application to apply to multiple colleges and universities.
You’ll complete two main parts:
Common questions: You complete these one time, and they can be sent to multiple colleges.
College-specific questions: Each college may have a few additional questions for you to answer.
I recommend using the Common App for all colleges that accept it.
ApplyTexas is one application you can use to apply to many colleges and universities in Texas.
Apply to Texas public universities and participating community and private colleges.
Apply for scholarships at participating colleges and universities.
Information You’ll Need to Apply to College
College applications ask for a lot of information. Make sure you have the following ready before you start:
Personal Email: Use a personal email address, NOT your RISD student email. Your RISD email will be deleted in September 2027, and you will lose access to it. Check your personal email regularly, ideally every day.
Social Security Number: If you have one, include it on your application. This helps colleges match your documents to your application faster.
Citizenship Status: If you do not have a Social Security number, you will need to know your citizenship status.
High School Name: Use the full name L.V. Berkner High School. Use the application’s search tool to find your school instead of typing it in manually.
BHS School Code: 445841
Class Rank: RISD does not rank students outside of the Top 10%. If you are not ranked, look for the option or application process for non-ranking schools/districts.
Application Type: You are applying as a Fall 2027 Freshman. Even if you have earned college credit while in high school, you are still considered a freshman when you first enter college.
Graduation Date: May 2027 – Date TBA

Do not wait until the last minute to apply! Many colleges have additional steps you must complete after submitting your application. These may include sending transcripts, test scores, essays, or other documents.
Once a deadline passes, you may not be able to complete the application or move forward in the process.
It is the STUDENT’S responsibility to make sure every item on the college’s freshman admissions checklist is completed by the deadline.

College Application Fee Waiver
The most common way to qualify for an application fee waiver is by qualifying for free or reduced-price lunch.
You can request a fee waiver through the Common App. Your counselor will review and approve or deny your request.
A fee waiver can allow you to submit your college application without paying the application fee.
If a fee is required, your application may not be reviewed until the fee is paid or a fee waiver is submitted.
If you're applying to a school not on the Common App, you can request a paper fee waiver from Mr. Ibarra in his office.
