WJEC Eduqas A level Art and Design (Textile Design) A653QS
You will learn to develop skills and knowledge using industry standard software to create pattern and surface designs for fashion, costume, interiors and textile art. Visual imagery will be explored from direct observation and there will be opportunity to develop ideas in an expressive and imaginative way. You will have the opportunity to develop ideas through a range of textiles processes such as digital print, screen print, fabric manipulation, stitch and many more.
Component 1: Personal Investigation (60% of the A Level) Students present an individual project based on a personal idea or brief which can be presented in a sketchbook or portfolio and includes written work of 1000 to 3000 words which supports practical work.
Component 2: Externally Set Assignment (40% of the A Level) Students respond to a stimulus issued by Eduqas and a body of work is produced on one of the visual or written briefs. The finished outcome or series of outcomes are created during a 15 hour period of supervised time.
At the start of the course we teach you all the basic skills you will need to be successful on the A Level Textiles course. We teach you skills in screen print, mono print, hand embroidery, machine stitch, fabric manipulation and digital textiles.
We use a range of equipment and resources that are specialist to the Textiles course, and some similar to what you will use at degree level.
We will also teach you how to research, select appropriate and relevant sources to take inspiration from and how to confidently visually analyse the work of others to allow you to set out clear plans for your own personal project.
The Textiles course boasts a range of equipment including:
A large LED exposure unit for creating photographic screen prints, used in both the fashion and interiors industries.
over 25 sewing machines used for fabric manipulation and fashion and costume construction,
multiple printers including a large format printer for creating lengths of digital printed wallpaper or fabrics,
shared cameras and photography studio to photograph final pieces or develop fashion marketing and promotion skills,
a range of fabrics and dyes to explore and use within personal projects,
a range of iMacs installed with Adobe software for developing images, drawings and patterns.

Below are some links of sites and blogs we regularly encourage students to use for research and wider reading opportunities to help with their projects. You will also find ideas for inspiration, competitions, work experience and job postings to give you an idea of how the industry looks for new employees!
It's important that Textiles students experience working in different environments and settings to gain practical experience, but also to put theory into practice and document their journey. Every year we offer an international Art trip (please see the 'Overseas Trips' page) but in Textiles we also visit a different locations to gather research for projects, such as York, Durham and Newcastle as well as gallery and museum visits including:
The Knit and Stitch Show, Harrogate
Beamish Museum
Bowes Museum, Barnard Castle
The Botanic Gardens, Durham
We also encourage students to visit museums and galleries in their own time that are personal to their projects. Some recommendations we have are shown below.
