Text Books

All students are issued text books for the course through the QE Library. For A level maths you get a pure maths and an applied maths text book in Year 1 which you will also keep into Year 2. In Year 2 you are also issued with pure and applied books which cover the content for the second year of the course. You also have access to ActiveLearn which has electronic versions of the text book with full worked solutions for all of the questions.

For A level further maths you are issued with four text books of the the two years of the course. ActiveLearn also gives you access to the electronic versions with worked solutions.

Calculators

For both maths and further maths you must have a suitable scientific calculator that has additional functions to those on the calculator you will have used for GCSE maths. We ask that you buy the latest version Casio ClassWiz fx-991CW model. It usually costs around £25-£30.  It replaces the previous modefx-991EX

Some of our students, particularly further maths students, also to use a graphical calculator. We have some graphical calculators which can be taken out on loan from the library. Some students like to buy their own. We recommend fx-CG50 Colour Graphic Calculator or the cheaper fx-9860GIII entry level graphic calculator. This is completely optional.

Websites

There are lots of maths websites that our students find useful for video tutorials, worksheets of questions with solutions and practice exam papers and mark-schemes. Desmos is also useful for plotting graphs. Here are links to some of the more popular ones.

Exercise Books

Yes we really do use exercise books! You will work in 'oversized' A4 squared exercise books for maths and further maths. You will have a blue exercise book for your work in class and a red exercise book for your work out of class (this includes preparation work, homework tasks, revision, practice papers). We ask you to make a small contribution to the cost of the exercise books but it means you don't need to buy files and file paper for maths.
