In October some of QE’s keenest mathematicians entered the national annual UK Mathematics Trust Senior Maths Challenge. The challenge is to solve 25 maths problems in 90 minutes. They achieved excellent results with many of those entering receiving a certificate. Altogether, QE students were awarded six gold, twenty-seven silver and twenty-one bronze certificates. Year 2 students Rohan Kishore and Rushil Partha, along with Year 1 students Noble Anim, Zedd Bignall, Luke Grabham and Daniel Owen, all scored very highly and were awarded gold certificates. Rohan and Noble achieved the highest scores in the respective year groups. About 10% of students taking part in this national competition achieve gold and are invited to take part in the follow-on rounds in November where they face even tougher challenges of mathematical skills and understanding.
Helen Carvill, Course Leader for A Level Mathematics, said “we are very impressed by the number of excellent mathematicians here at QE, many of whom will go on to use their mathematical and problem-solving skills at a higher level in a wide range of careers.” Many of the Y2 students have applied to study subjects such as mathematics, economics, engineering and computer science at university.

The AMSP (Advanced Maths Support Programme) provided an afternoon problem-solving session for our Further Maths students and some of the Maths students. The session gave students the opportunity to worh together to tackle some challenging questions that required them to use their algebra and problem-solving skills. The session also provided students with guidance on the various maths-based university entrance test and gave them the chance to try the sort of questions they would be likely to have to tackle in such a test.
Here are a few ideas to keep you busy over the summer:
films about maths - yes there are some and these are well worth watching!
popular maths books - not your usual text book stuff
some websites with lots of interesting and challenging maths facts, puzzles and problems
