人機互動是個不斷進步，不斷演進的學門。除了互動科技之外，人因工程，設計，傳播，服務，藝術等領域也不斷讓 HCI 的研究及應用更加豐富，更有開創性。TAICHI2021 很榮幸能邀請到三位重量級的學者，從文化傳播，人工智慧，和互動藝術的觀點來分享他們的看法，擴充人機互動領域的高度，廣度及深度。

Susan Fussell

Professor, Department of Information Science, Cornell University

Susan R. Fussell is a Professor in the Department of Information Science and Department of Communication at Cornell University. She received her BS degree in psychology and sociology from Tufts University, and her Ph.D. in social and cognitive psychology from Columbia University. Dr. Fussell's primary interests lie in the areas of computer-supported cooperative work and computer-mediated communication. Her current projects focus on intercultural and multilingual communication, telepresence robotics, online communication, and tools to promote wellbeing.

Abstract

Understanding and Supping Communication Across Language Boundaries

Comuter-mediated communication (CMC) tools and social media potentially allow people to interact fluidly across national, cultural and linguistic boundaries in ways that would have been difficult if not impossible in the past. To date, however, however, much of this potential fails to be realized. A single individual is unlikely to be fluent in a wide array of languages. The use of a common language such as English permits a degree of interaction with speakers of other native languages, but it can have negative effects on non-native speakers. Advances in machine translation (MT) and other AI technologies could allow people to communicate with one another in their native language, but translation errors can create sizeable misunderstandings when MT is used in conversational settings.

In a series of studies, Prof. Fussell and her students have been exploring the problem space of inter-lingual communication, with the goals of better understanding the challenges of interaction across language boundaries and of informing the design of new tools to support this interaction. She will first describe two interview studies exploring how the need to use a non-native language affects communication and coordination in both formal and informal settings. Then describe several tools they have developed to make MT more usable in everyday conversation and present the results of lab studies evaluating these tools. Taken together, these studies help advance the area of multilingual computer-mediated communication.

許永真

Professor, Department of Computer Science and Information Engineering,
National Taiwan University

Jane Hsu is the Pegatron Professor of Computer Science and Information Engineering at National Taiwan University, and Director of NTU IoX Center. Her research interests include multiagent systems, machine learning, crowdsourcing, commonsense knowledge, and smart IoT. Prof. Hsu is leading research collaboration with Intel Labs, Delta Research Center, and Compal, exploring topics in Augmented Collective Beings to facilitate human-AI/IoT collaboration and Digital Closeness. She has been actively involved in AAAI, TAAI, IEEE, and ACM conferences, and served as the President of Taiwanese Association for Artificial Intelligence in 2013-14. She received MSRA Collaborative Research Award and Intel Labs Distinguished Collaborator Award.

許永真教授現任臺大資訊工程學系暨網路與多媒體研究所。許教授致力於人工智慧研究領域逾三十年，研究主題含智慧代理人、智慧物聯網、人機共學、結合群眾運算及機器學習技術建構繁體中文常識知識庫。自2012年起擔任「臺大智慧聯網創新研究中心」主任，積極進行跨領域、跨校、跨國、跨產學合作，建立世界級人工智慧、人機互動、與物聯網相關研究的重鎮。許教授活躍於國際學術領域，目前擔任科技部智慧學門召集人、NICT Japan 國際諮詢委員，曾擔任臺大資訊系主任、台灣人工智慧學會理事長。近年來在產學研究合作上的成果，得到2020 臺大和碩講座、2016 MSRA Collaborative Research Award, 及Intel Labs Distinguished Collaborator Award 等獎勵。

為台灣新媒體藝術的先鋒。曾獲MADATAC 馬德里當代科技與影音藝術大獎、台灣當代藝術最具代表性的台北獎、台北縣政府獎；代表華人藝術界最具有當代藝術精神的李仲生當代繪畫創作獎，為歷屆最年輕的得獎人；為美國亞洲文化協會（洛克菲勒兄弟基金會）台灣獎助計畫之受獎人，以交換學者身分赴美參觀與訪問；獲美國舊金山赫德蘭藝術中心 Headland Center for the Arts 邀請為駐村藝術家；受香港1a space 藝術空間邀請與香港藝術發展局贊助，為1a space第一位駐場藝術家；以及數位影像與科技藝術頗負盛名的北歐當代藝術中心 Nordic Institute for Contemporary Art 之駐場藝術家；獲巴黎西帖國際藝術村工作室獎學金第一名；受波士頓市政府之邀為波士頓交換藝術家；2014、2016、2018年國立台灣美術館大型跨界創作計畫第一名。

獲西班牙 MADATAC「馬德里當代科技與影音藝術節」邀請個展於馬德里 Media Lab Prado。西班牙 San Lorenzo del Escorial 市長邀請，個展於該市文化中心。2009年獲奧地利林茲OK center邀請，於該中心舉辦大型個展。並曾受邀個展於台北當代藝術館，台北數位藝術中心、台北市立美術館、北歐當代藝術中心、香港視覺藝術中心、舊金山赫德蘭藝術中心、關渡美術館、伊通公園、双方畫廊等。
