We only have 10 years left until 2030, the achievement target date of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)!
Unfortunately, we are not close to accomplishing the SDG targets at the moment.
For this reason, the United Nations has designated this decade from 2020 as "10 years of action".
They are calling for expanding and accelerating concrete actions.
In order to contribute to achieving the SDGs, you students of Ueda High School have personally been studying global issues that need to be solved. Every one of you have made concrete proposals to solve a problem. Unfortunately, as you know, it can be difficult to act on the proposals immediately and solve those large social problems.
However, do you know the word "GLOCAL"?
Glocal is a word that combines two English words,
"global" and "local".
*The concept originally comes from a Japanese word, 'dochakuka'(土着化), which means global localization.
The idea of GLOCAL is that social problems are globally interrelated and interconnected.
As a result, we can make changes in our local area and these will help make a positive change globally.
You may have heard the phrase, 'Think Globally, Act Locally."
This is the focus of our discussion this afternoon.
We are going to consider SDGs as they relate to our school.
We will ask: "How could our school be more sustainable?"
There is no correct answer.
The community called Ueda High School is a "society" for high school students and staff.
Let's have a dialogue about the ideal school, and come up with an action plan towards sustainability that we can achieve here, locally, by 2030.
THE DISCUSSION
An Action Plan Toward a Sustainable Glocal Change by 2030
i. List all of the problems you can think of with the school
*eg environment, workload, school life, clubs, social life etc.
ii. Categorise the problems
*ask which SDG does each problem relate to?
iii. Choose ONE problem to focus on for the rest of the discussion.
Consider that problem together
*what bothers you/ what worries you about it?
*why is it the way it is?
*what is the purpose of that thing? / what is the value of that thing?
*If it stays the same who / what suffers? (consider the environment, people, culture, economy, health)
i. What would 'better' look like? What would be different?
ii. if it changes who and what benefits, and in what ways? (consider the environment, people, culture, economy, health)
iii. What can we do to make that change a reality by 2030?
*what actions can we take? (current students, future students, OBs & OGs, the community)
*what mindset changes can we make? (current students, future students, OBs & OGs, the community)
i. Let's create a slogan/ catchphrase, and logo to communicate the change and invite others to join us in taking action!
*If this change was the title of a book or song what would it be? (a few words to summarise it)
*what picture(s), image(s) or symbol(s) do you 'see' when you think of this change?
ii. Let's share this with the rest of the English Discussion Room
*who will share with the group?
*Tell everyone...
-what the problem is
-why it's a problem (who and what suffers )
-what can be done in the school to solve this problem (what actions and mindset changes are needed)
-what the slogan is, and what the logo looks like
