Year 8 Communication Exit Point - Videos on Global Issues
Our Year 8 students were asked to make a video on a Global Issue - these were taken straight from the IB Diploma programme:
Culture, identity and community
Students might focus on the way in which works explore aspects of family, class, race, ethnicity, nationality, religion, gender and sexuality, and the way these impact on individuals and societies. They might also focus on issues concerning migration, colonialism and nationalism.
Beliefs, values and education
Students might focus on the way in which works explore the beliefs and values nurtured in particular societies and the ways they shape individuals, communities and educational systems. They might also explore the tensions that arise when there are conflicts of beliefs and values, and ethics.
Politics, power and justice
Students might focus on the ways in which works explore aspects of rights and responsibilities, the workings and structures of governments and institutions. They might also investigate hierarchies of power, the distribution of wealth and resources, the limits of justice and the law, equality and inequality, human rights, and peace and conflict.
Art, creativity and the imagination
Students might focus on the ways in which works explore aspects of aesthetic inspiration, creation, craft, and beauty. They might also focus on the shaping and challenging of perceptions through art, and the function, value and effects of art in society.
Science, technology and the environment
Students might focus on the ways in which works explore the relationship between humans and the environment and the implications of technology and media for society. They might also consider the idea of scientific development and progress.

Year 8 were asked to study the sonnet form then write their own. It wasn't easy: a 'Shakespearean' sonnet must be written in iambic pentameter, have 14 lines, an ABABCDCDEFEFGG rhyme scheme, 3 quatrains for the thought structure, and a concluding rhyming couplet, PLUS a volta beginning on line 9. The results were truly fantastic - take a look. Each featured student has received 3 house points.

This past month, our entire year group had the opportunity to participate in an inter-house debate competition organized by Mr Chan, Mr Wilson and Ms Motwani. The purpose was to reinforce our team spirit while learning and expressing our points of views about recent global issues.
To start off, each house was split into two groups. Each group had the chance to participate in the preliminary round. It was set up as a typical competition, meaning that only the winning teams would participate in the semi-finals. For the finals, we even had the privilege of having Mr Clayton, Mr Williams and Ms Hall as our adjudicators.
This experience was extremely helpful and enabled us to work on a variety of skills. For example, we had to make sure we were always alert and reactive, to be able to write rebuttals on the spot. This competition also allowed us to work on our communication and teamwork abilities. We had to work together in order to clearly get our points across to the adjudicators.
Personally, I had a wonderful time participating in this competition. The motions were interesting and original. The thrill of the debates really encouraged us to be as powerful and persuasive as possible. Everyone was supportive and the environment was really positive even though it was a competition. I really hope we organize similar events in the future because it was fun, engaging and inclusive.
