Glacier Bay became a national monument in 1925 and was recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1979.  

With over 1,000 glaciers and abundant marine wildlife, Glacier Bay is one of the principal tourist destinations in the Southeast Region. In 2018, it was the highest-rated cruise destination in the world.
