Sometimes called the panhandle of Alaska (it looks like the handle if the rest of Alaska is a pan), the Southeast region is geographically apart from the rest of the state.
The borders of this region are very distinct. To the west is the Gulf of Alaska, and to the east, north, and south is the international border with Canada. The southern border with Canada is a 50-mile wide open stretch of water called the Dixon Entrance.

Historical extra- The border between the Southeast and Canada was originally based on an agreement between Russia and Great Britain in 1825. During the Gold Rush, conflict between Canada and the U.S. over the details of this agreement led to an arbitration settlement that created the present-day border.
