The Southeast region has a population of approximately 75,000 people. Almost half of this population lives in Juneau, the capital of Alaska and the state's third-largest city. Sitka and Ketchikan are also major Alaskan towns and the fourth and fifth-largest cities in the state.
Except for Haines and Skagway, which have a road connection to Canada, the only access to the towns of the Southeast is by plane or boat. The Alaska Marine Highway is the most important means of transportation for most residents.
