Skyline of downtown Anchorage
Much of the Southcentral Region's economy is centered around Anchorage. With half of the state's population, it is the business, financial, medical, and administrative center for the whole state. Consider these examples:
While petroleum companies' field work may be on the North Slope, their business headquarters are in Anchorage.
The financial and banking industry of Alaska is centered in Anchorage.
For much of rural Alaska, Anchorage is where they receive anything beyond basic medical care.
Even though the capital is in Juneau, most of the state government's administrative offices are in Anchorage.
Almost anything or anyone coming into the state, or going from one place to another in the state, transits through Anchorage. Not to mention, Anchorage is the fourth busiest cargo airport in the world!
Besides Anchorage's importance as the state's principal city, other important economic activities in the Southcentral Region are natural gas and oil production in the Cook Inlet, commercial fishing, and tourism.
