Our reading tests assess concepts rather than comprehension so it is not something students are able to study for at home. Students need to pay attention in class and ask questions if they don't understand. Students will have weekly word parts quizzes. These will be root words they are working on throughout the week, the quizzes are typically on Fridays.
By fourth grade, it is expected that students read for 20 minutes each night. I know that is not always possible but it will help your child improve in all areas if they read consistently. Please try and encourage them to read daily. Remember the goal is to get students to like reading, do not force them to read as a punishment. Most days they will have 10-15 minutes of reading time during class to help build reading stamina.
Students need to complete:
2 achieve Articles at 75% or higher a week (this will increase as the year progresses)
Lexia (goal set by student achievement)
Grammar (one week)
Handwriting (one-page front and back)
They should finish all this during class but some students may need to work on it at home if they are not using their class time wisely.
Word Parts are similar to how younger grades do spelling. Students will work on slides during independent time all week. Friday they will apply what they learned on a quiz. The words they practice will not appear on the test, only the word part will. Students will need to apply what they know about that word part to make meaning of the words on the quiz.
