Meets the 1st Monday of each month

Battle of the Books is a reading competition against other middle school students across the district. Members will read from a preselected list of books. All members of BoB will participate in a school-wide “battle” where they are quizzed on what they remember from the novels they read. The top 6 students from the school Battle will also compete in a district-wide “battle” where they are again quizzed (with different questions) on what they remember from the books they read while competing against other middle schools from Horry County. During the Battle of the Books competitions, participants will answer all questions with the title and author of the book. Students must be recommended by a classroom teacher to participate in the Battle of the Books. To be recommended by a teacher, students must maintain solid grades in all subjects and complete all homework and assignments. This club follows the rules set by the HCS Middle School Librarians, so all teams going to the district battle have followed the same procedures and are on the same level.

Book Club is a relaxing club for readers and book lovers. There will be no tests, no stress. We will meet as a group once a month before school, where we will have discussions about the book we are currently reading, do a small activity, and receive the next book to read. If we receive Advanced Readers Copies (ARCs) of books from publishers, members are required to write a review of the book before receiving the next Book Club book. Students get to keep the Book Club book picks to add to their personal libraries.
Meets the 1st Wednesday of each month

The Makerspace Club is where members can build, create, play, and craft in the Library Makerspace. We will meet as a group once a month before school. Anyone can use the Library Makerspace - you do not have to join this club to use it. The benefit of joining the club is more time in the Makerspace - you will get to work on projects during club meetings (which will happen outside of school hours), not just when you can find time to come to the Library throughout the school day. Also, Makerspace members will be the only students that are permitted to use certain Makerspace tech, like the Nintendo Switch.
Makerspace Club meets before school once a month to participate in a special makerspace activity, or students may work on an individual project (if you are doing a project for the HCS Tech Fair - this is a great time to work on your project).
As a member of any Library Club, you are expected to follow three simple rules.
Be On Time.
You are expected to be courteous of your time, your parent’s time, my time, and your fellow students’ time by arriving promptly for all club meetings.
Have Good Grades.
You are expected to maintain acceptable grades all school year. School comes first, always. If you are failing classes, you need to dedicate time to schoolwork- not Library Clubs. You will be removed from any Library club(s) you participate in if you have failing grades in any of your classes.
Have Good Behavior.
You are expected to be good FMS citizens and have good behavior throughout the school year. You will be removed from any Library club(s) you participate in if you are repeatedly on the school discipline list. I understand that sometimes things happen - you are free to come speak with me if you are concerned about your club status because of discipline.
Please remember that clubs are EXTRAcurriculars. They are not required- they are an extra activity. Every student has the right to join a Library club, but if you cannot follow the few simple rules listed above, you will be removed from the club(s).
