Block scheduling using the 4 x 4 (semester/semester) method, provides for the selection of thirty-two (32) units over the four-year period. The objective then for each student is to best select the appropriate classes that will further his/her career goals. This selection process is made more challenging when one realizes that there are many courses and/or levels to choose from at AHS, Academy for Technology and Academics, Academy of Arts, Science, & Technology, Horry Georgetown Technical College, and Coastal Carolina University. Where does one begin? What is the plan?

Once a year you will meet with your counselor to work on your Individual Graduation Plan to select your classes. Some of the questions you may need to consider when selecting your classes:

1. What units are needed to complete the requirements for the high school diploma?

2. What courses are needed to prepare me for my career?

3. What courses will satisfy the requirements for admission to the two-year or four-year college of my choice?

4. Which courses will help me better understand computers and technology?

5. Which courses provide for the experiences in the fine arts: Art, Music, Drama?

6. Which courses will place me on a path to help others and become a contributing member of my community?

7. Have I selected courses to adequately challenge and prepare myself for my future goals?

Please keep the following in mind when selecting your classes:

• Classes are formed, and teacher schedules are based on what you choose during your IGP conference, or on the pre-registration form, therefore in most cases, requests for changes for the next fall cannot be honored.

• All students must take a minimum of eight (8) units each year. Students will be enrolled in courses generally comprising four units of credit per semester except for students involved in school-sponsored work-study programs.

• Because All English courses are sequential, students may not take two (2) required English courses at the same time. Students who have failed English and will not graduate with their peers may apply for approval from the principal to schedule two English classes in the same year.

• If a student enrolls after the beginning of a course, attendance counts from the first day of the course, not from the day of enrollment. Students transferring from another school or from another level of the same course will receive credit for days attended in previous classes.

• Students that transfer from other schools are given credit for previously acquired competencies whenever comparable

• Students that register for courses and become ineligible for them due to failures are responsible for checking their schedules to make sure that appropriate changes have been made. They should make arrangements to meet with their guidance counselor for any schedule problems or concerns.
