My name is James Hickey. I've been teaching elementary music in Hays CISD since 2007. I was born and raised in Laredo, TX and moved to the Austin area in 2006. I started teaching a year after graduating with my first master's degree. I've always enjoyed singing both in choirs and at karaoke! My primary instrument is the piano which I started late, at 18 years old, but quickly caught up because I found that piano made sense in my head. It came naturally to me. I studied piano under Dr. Fritz Gechter at TAMIU in Laredo. He became my mentor, and inspired me to pursue music education as my career. After graduating college, my parents, both strong supporters of education and lifelong learning, encouraged me to earn my master's before starting my career. So I left Laredo for the first time at 22 and attended Texas State for two and half years before graduating. After graduating, I found a job in Hays CISD and the rest is history!
It's been my pleasure and honor to serve as the Tom Green Elementary music teacher since 2008. TGES is my home and my work family makes me want to come to work each day. Music is for everyone. And I am determined to help each child find their voice. Please join us and let's make music together!
