AKS: 4MA.E.8 identify and draw geometric objects, classify polygons based on properties, and solve problems involving area and perimeter of rectangular figures.
Learning Targets: I can draw lines of symmetry in two-dimensional figures.
I can identify lines of symmetry in two-dimensional figures.
We have learned how to identify and draw lines of symmetry in two-dimensional figures and describe how these shapes are symmetrical.
Today, we will continue learning about lines of symmetry. We will learn how to draw an unknown part of a two-dimensional figure with an identified line of symmetry when one-half of the figure is drawn.
When working with symmetry, sometimes only half of a whole figure is presented. A line of symmetry is identified. However, we are asked to figure out and draw the other symmetrical half. Drawing the symmetrical half will reveal the whole figure with a line of symmetry.
Let’s take a look at this example. The dashed line will represent the line of symmetry. We will use grid paper to help us figure out how to draw the unknown symmetrical half of a figure.
The figure shown is one-half of a symmetric figure. Use the grid to draw the whole figure.
Let’s think through this figure. I notice that the figure has a vertical line of symmetry. This means that the image must be drawn on the right side of the grid to create a symmetrical mirror image of the left side of the figure.
Mathematicians, it is your turn to try!
The figure shown is one-half of a symmetric figure. Use the grid to help draw the whole figure.
Today, we learned how to draw the symmetrical half of a figure using grid paper and a given line of symmetry. When working with half-drawn figures, remember to be precise when counting the sides' units in the given part of the figure. Draw the symmetrical half of the figure so that the figure you draw is a mirror image of the given figure.
