Yellow River Wildlife Sanctuary Launch Video
We will watch the video from 0:18 - 4:25.
Reflect on the conditions a small enclosure has on animals and how having a properly sized enclosure benefits them.
As you watch the video, jot down what you notice and wonder about the Yellow River Wildlife Sanctuary.
The video shows that the bears' enclosure was too small and not a good place to live. Because of this, the new owners created a new bear enclosure that better meets the bears' needs. However, the staff at the Yellow River Wildlife Sanctuary needs your help!
You have been asked to design an enclosure for the Yellow River Wildlife Sanctuary. The rectangular enclosure must have an area of either 48 square meters or 84 square meters. When designing your enclosure, consider the type of animal you are creating it for, how many animals will be in it, and the perimeter of the enclosure to determine the amount of fencing that will be needed.
In your collaborative groups of 2–3 students:
1. Use color tiles and grid paper.
2. Use the Yellow River Wildlife Sanctuary Animal Enclosure Recording Sheet.
Part 1: Using meter sticks on the floor to represent 1 square meter will give you a reference to how large 1 square meter is.
Allow yourself to stand or sit in the space.
Part 2: You will spend 10 minutes exploring the Yellow River Wildlife Sanctuary website to learn about the animals and determine which animal enclosure your group plans to create. As you explore, remember the Yellow River Wildlife Sanctuary enclosure that needs our assistance must have an area of 48 or 84 square meters.
Part 3:
Pick which animal your group would like to create an enclosure for. Each group should create enclosures for different animals (e.g., Group 1 Pigs, Group 2 Turtles, Group 3 Birds, Group 4 Rabbits, Group 5 Sloth).
Explore 3 possible models/ dimensions to represent the enclosure for the chosen animal. Consider the factors of 48 or 84 to determine the side lengths of your enclosures. Also, consider the perimeter of your models to determine the enclosure size that would best meet your animal's needs.
Represent the enclosure for your animal using the Yellow River Wildlife Sanctuary Animal Enclosure Recording Sheet.
