In 2019, Mr. Phillips attended the Georgia Film Academy's two-week teacher training at Trilith Studios in Fayetteville, Georgia. While there he and other film educators received thorough major motion picture training. The training was led by industry experts, with industry equipment, in the same studio Spider-Man Homecoming was filmed in! The training included nine units of curriculum directly aligned to GaDOE standards and provided opportunities to network with teachers and industry professionals from across the state of Georgia. The training Mr. Phillips received from the GFA allowed him to bring it back to the students. With the GFA Curriculum students are introduced to the film industry and their many departments; Production, Camera, Grip & Electric, Sound, Post-Production, and many others. Students learn the communication chain within each department, their responsibilities, and how these departments work together to create a film. Throughout the curriculum students partake in exercises to learn the equipment and showcase their skills. Following the exercises students produce a short film provided by a script directly from the GFA Instructors. The students are free to adjust the script to the style of film of their choosing. The ultimate goal of the GFA program is to have students who are able to walk onto a film set and be "Camera Ready."
In 2020, after completing the GFA curriculum, video II and video III students began pre-production on a student written short film, "Destination Helios." The project's goal was to simulate the environment of a true film set. The film involved 55 students from the video and theater programs. Despite the interference of the pandemic the students were able to finish the film with what they had available and premiered the film on April 15, 2021 via Ares Studios' YouTube Channel.
