Title:
A Corpus-Informed Vocabulary Pathway for EMI: From Core Words to Technical Terms
Abstract:
As English-medium instruction (EMI) expands in engineering programs, vocabulary knowledge becomes a central factor in student success. Rather than treating vocabulary as a general language issue, this lecture presents a corpus-informed lexical pathway for EMI preparation. I will introduce the New General Service List (NGSL) as a foundation for high-frequency core vocabulary and demonstrate how additional layers—such as academic and discipline-specific vocabulary—affect lexical coverage of engineering textbooks, lecture slides, and technical documents. Using lexical profiling examples, I will illustrate how comprehension levels shift as different vocabulary layers are added, and what this implies for realistic EMI readiness. The session will also introduce freely available NGSL-based tools that allow students and faculty to analyze texts, identify priority vocabulary, and build a systematic and efficient learning plan. Finally, I will discuss how institutions can further increase efficiency by developing domain-specific vocabulary lists based on their own curricular materials.
