Preparing for English Medium Instruction: Challenges Ahead and Possible Solutions

Abstract: 

English Medium Instruction (EMI) has seen rapid growth in higher education worldwide, with a particularly fast expansion in Japan as part of its internationalisation efforts, including government initiatives such as the Top Global University Project. Although EMI has grown exponentially in Japanese higher education in recent decades, research has reported a lack of evidence on the impact of the medium of instruction on students’ content learning outcomes.

In this talk, I will introduce a study conducted at a Japanese university. This research compared students in English Medium Instruction (EMI) with those in Japanese Medium Instruction (JMI) in several aspects of their content learning outcomes. Building on these findings, I will discuss the importance of academic language support, effective teaching practices, support mechanisms for international students and the impact of internationalisation on students’ educational experiences in Japanese higher education. I will also explore strategies for EMI teaching and learning, including ideas for managing varying levels of English proficiency in international and multilingual classes, as well as preparing glossaries or supplementary materials in STEM subjects. I will conclude the talk with recommendations for students and faculty members who are in the process of transitioning to EMI.

概要：
英語による授業（EMI: English Medium Instruction）は、近年、世界中の高等教育で急速に広がっており、日本でも国際化の取り組みの一環として、特に活発に導入が進んでいます。中でも「スーパーグローバル大学創成支援事業（Top Global University Project）」のような文部科学省の政策が大きな後押しとなっています。ただし、ここ数十年でEMIが日本の大学に広まってきた一方で、授業言語が学生の専門知識の習得にどのような影響を与えているのかについては、まだ十分に明らかになっていないのが現状です。

今回の講演では、日本のある大学で実施した研究を紹介します。この研究では、英語による授業（EMI）と日本語による授業（JMI）を受講する化学専攻の学生の授業内容の理解度の違いを比較しました。具体的には、計算問題および記述問題の成績、ならびに授業内容に対する理解度の自己評価を、両グループ間で比較しました。本研究の結果をもとに、学術的な英語運用能力のサポート（academic English language support）の必要性、効果的な授業の進め方、留学生のための支援体制、そして国際化が学生の学習経験にどのような影響を与えるかについて議論します。

また、英語による授業をより効果的に進めるための具体的なアイデアについても取り上げます。たとえば、英語力に差がある学生への対応方法、多言語環境での授業の工夫、理工系科目における用語集や補助教材の活用など、授業の中ですぐに取り入れやすい実践例を挙げます。最後に、これから英語開講の授業に取り組まれる学生の方々に向けて、授業の準備に有用な具体的な対策や提案について共に考える機会を共有できればと考えています。
