Principles of Construction Syllabus

Course Description:  This course is designed to introduce and explore various career options in manufacturing and construction.  Students will be required to learn how to properly and safely use the various machines, tools, and materials in the workshop.  The topics presented during the course of the semester include measurement, fabrication, construction, manufacturing, engineering, and drafting.

Teaching Styles and Activities:  Several teaching styles will be used throughout the semester including lecture, working in small groups, working individually, textbook work, and research.

Required Materials: 

 

Pencils

Composition Book or Graph Ruled Book 

 

Recommended Materials:

 

Safety Glasses

Ruler

 

Grade Scale:  All assignments will be weighed as follows:

 

Major Summatives-70%

Minor Summatives-30%

 

Final Project:  The final project will be an essay about one or more projects that were made during the semester.  Students will be able to reflect on the different building techniques and tools that were used   in order to complete the projects. 

 

Classroom Procedures:

 

Get your materials, go to the restroom, and get a drink before coming to class.   

Sharpen pencils and be seated before the tardy bell rings.

Raise your hand to ask for help.

No one talks while I am.

Assignments must have your name, the date, and the class period in the designated area of the page.

Written assignments and drawings will be placed in the correct drawer at the front of the classroom.

At the end of class you are not dismissed by the bell.  The classroom must be clean and materials put away.

Push in your chairs before you leave.

 

Workshop Procedures:

At the end of class you are not dismissed by the bell.  The shop must be cleaned and projects placed in the cabinets or on the counter.   

 

 

 

Classroom Expectations:

 

·         Be ready to work and learn when the bell rings.

·         Bring all materials to class.

·         Follow the safety procedures.

·         Follow directions the first time they are given.

 

Consequences for not following the Classroom Expectations:

1.       Warning

2.       A ticket will be taken

3.       Detention and a phone call to your parents  (after losing half of team tickets)

4.       ISSC and an Office Referral (after losing all team tickets)
