Dual Language at Hodge Elementary
FAQ ABOUT DL
What is Dual Language?
Dual Language is a bilingual program model that provides instruction in two languages. Dual Language programs can be One Way or Two Way Models. Dual language programs differ from other bilingual models such as transitional or early-exit and late- exit bilingual programs.
Which Dual Language Programs are offered at Hodge?
Hodge offers both a one-way dual language program and a two-way dual language program.
So, What is the difference between One Way and Two Way Dual Language Programs?
These two programs share the same principles and seek to achieve the same goals: bilingualism, biliteracy, academic achievement in two languages, and cross-cultural competence. The main difference between these two programs is that in a two-way dual language program, English speaking students and Spanish speaking students are integrated for academic instruction while in one way dual language program only Spanish speaking students participate.
When does dual language instruction begin?
Dual Language begins at Kindergarten and continues through grade 5. Students will have an opportunity to continue to develop bilingualism and biliteracy in English and Spanish in middle schools participating in the Dual Language program or enrolling in Spanish for Spanish speakers middle school courses.
What are the benefits of a dual language program?
Bilingual and multilingual children benefit academically from knowing more than one language in many ways.
Because they are able to switch between languages, they develop more flexible approaches to thinking through problems.
The ability to read and think in two (or more) different languages promotes higher levels of abstract thought, which is important in learning.
Children who learn to read in their home language have a strong foundation to build upon when they learn a second language. They can easily apply their knowledge about reading to their second language.
Being bilingual supports children in maintaining strong ties with their family, culture, and community.
Bilingual children are also able to make new friends and create strong relationships using their second language.
Does a child or parent need to know Spanish in order to participate in the two-way dual language program?
No, no prior knowledge or language proficiency in Spanish is necessary for participation in the two-way dual language program. However, you can help your child by:
Encouraging friendship with students who speak other languages.
Understanding it takes time to learn a second language. Be patient, and encourage your child to persist.
Asking your child to explain what he or she is learning and doing. Your child should do this in the home language.
Developing a working relationship with your child's teacher.
Reading and speaking to your child frequently in your home language.
Will my child always be behind in the subjects taught in their second language?
No. Dual Language is an enrichment program of acceleration, not remediation. The best way to acquire a second language is through meaningful and authentic experiences. Academic content instruction provides this meaningful context, and forms a strong basis for the power of dual language education. Your child's teacher will use a variety of strategies to help students understand oral and written language without the need of translation. Teachers will implement Sheltered Instruction strategies for student understanding; furthermore, students must be seated in bilingual pairs to help each other and serve as language models.
How is my child assessed if they are in a dual language classroom?
For Social Studies, Science, and Math your child will be evaluated using the district nine weeks report card assessments in the language of instruction. Students will be assessed in Reading and Writing in their first language (English or Spanish).
