Welcome to Hodge’s Dual Language Web page!

Dual Language is a form of bilingual education in which students are taught literacy and content in two languages. Hodge Elementary offers One-Way and Two-Way Dual Language Models. Hodge Elementary Dual Language Programs are committed to support linguistic and cultural diversity while promoting the three pillars of dual language instruction: Bilingualism and Biliteracy for EVERY student, high expectations for grade level achievement, and Cross-Cultural Awareness.

One-Way and Two-Way Dual Language Models

One-Way Dual Language is intended for native Spanish speakers to continue developing and building on their native language (Spanish) while increasing their English proficiency.

Two-Way Dual Language Programs enroll a balance of native English speakers and native speakers of the partner language (Spanish).

Both, The One-Way and Two-Way Dual Language Programs are designed to promote the three pillars of Dual Language to all our Emergent Bilingual Students, whether they are learning English or Spanish as a second language.

Students in dual language programs are presented with the social and cognitive benefits of bilingualism. They gain a second language, a broader vocabulary, and multiple views of the world, (Cazabon, Lambert, & Heise-Baigorria, 2002). In order to acquire these benefits, the program sets out to accomplish the following goals:

  • Increase the use of foreign language among monolingual groups

  • Develop children who will be more competitive in the global economy

  • Take advantage of the optimal window of learning a second language during the primary years while increasing the linguistic repertoire of each student.

  • Nurture an understanding of the different cultures living side by side in Denton

  • Give students an upper edge in high school, college, and the workplace

  • Develop positive cross-cultural attitudes and behavior
