Principles Of Health Science
Principles of Health Science provides knowledge and skills students need for careers in health care. Students explore the services, structure, and professions of the health care system and get guidance on choosing a specific career path in health services, including career paths in emergency medicine, nutrition, and alternative medicine.
In addition, students will expand their understanding of health and safety systems, how to address emergency situations, and deal with infection control issues. Students will also explore topics in medical science, terminology, procedures, and regulations - including an overview of physiology and medical measurements. Taught by Mrs. Perez.
Medical Terminology
The Medical Terminology course is designed to introduce students to the structure of medical terms, including prefixes, suffixes, word roots, singular and plural forms, and medical abbreviations. The course allows students to achieve comprehension of medical vocabulary appropriate to medical procedures, human anatomy and physiology, and pathophysiology. Taught by Mrs. Perez, Mrs. Bradbury, and Dr. Carrillo.
Anatomy and Physiology
Anatomy and Physiology is a course that will enable students to develop an understanding of the relationships between the structures and functions of the human body. Students will also learn the mechanisms for maintaining homeostasis within the human body. This course offers on-level and Dual-Credit classes. Taught by Mrs. Speelman.
Health Science Theory + Clinical Rotations
(Either CCMA or CNA) - Both Courses will also be certified in Phlebotomy and EKG Technician as well as receive their BLS for healthcare providers
The Health Science Clinical course is designed to provide for the development of advanced knowledge and skills related to a wide variety of health careers. Students will employ hands-on experiences for continued knowledge and skill development.
CNA (2 periods) The Certified Nurse Assistant course is designed for the student interested in a nursing or health careers. The course goal is for the student to become a Certified Nurse Assistant (CNA) and to pass the state licensing exam. The program is a combination of classroom, laboratory, and clinical learning that will introduce the student to all facets of the Nurse Assistant field. Content of the course includes the role and function of the CNA, anatomy and physiology, and basic patient care skills. Course instruction prepares students to qualify for the Texas Nurse Aide Competency Evaluation Exam for certification. Taught by Mrs. Bradbury.
CCMA (2 periods) prepares students to take the Certified Clinical Medical Assistant exam. Testing for this exam is required and will equip students with an employable certification in medical facilities. Instruction in this course includes study in clinical and administrative areas such as human anatomy, medical terminology, pharmacology, first aid, lab techniques, how to administer medicine, coding and insurance processing, record-keeping & accounting, and medical law and ethics. Taught by Dr. Carrillo.
Students must provide their own transportation for all clinical rotations throughout the year. Both clinical classes will also be proficient in EKGs, vital signs and will have the opportunity to be certified in phlebotomy as well.
