Comal ISD recognizes the growing importance of artificial intelligence (AI) in education and its potential to significantly impact teaching and learning inside and outside our classrooms. Our aim is to enable the transparent and responsible use of generative AI technologies while simultaneously emphasizing and encouraging academic integrity, critical thinking, deep understanding, cybersecurity, and data privacy.
Artificial Intelligence guidelines for teachers and students can be found in the Grading Guidelines.
From the 2025-2026 Grading Guidelines:
Academic Honesty and Integrity
In the context of academic integrity, AI-generated content will not be viewed as a student’s own work. Such content may, however, be incorporated into student products with the expressed consent of the assigning teacher. Work that has been plagiarized from a generative AI program will result in academic consequences that align to Comal ISD’s grading guidelines, academic dishonesty procedures, and the Student Code of Conduct.
Cybersecurity and Data Privacy
Beyond considerations related to academic integrity, staff must be aware, and make students aware of data privacy concerns. Personal information should never be shared with artificial intelligence tools. Users should never include personal information, including names, phone numbers, addresses, social security numbers, grades, license plate numbers, birthdates, or anything else that may be used to identify an individual. Generative AI learns, in part, from data provided in prompts and could potentially share personally identifiable information with other users under certain circumstances.
Students and teachers should follow the Comal ISD Acceptable Use Policy and consider the following when utilizing artificial intelligence tools:
In applicable grade levels and subject areas, teachers should provide students with information on classroom expectations regarding generative AI use, minimally, at the beginning of each school year.
Depending on specific learning objectives, Comal ISD teachers may specify instances where AI assistance is permitted and where it is considered a violation of academic integrity.
Assigning teachers must clearly communicate guidelines regarding incorporation of AI into student products. Instances of AI-generated content must be credited, referenced, and/or otherwise cited in a recommended manner. When prohibited, the use of AI to assist with student work may be considered academic dishonesty.
AI technologies may be integrated into the curriculum to enhance learning experiences and promote digital literacy.
Educators will receive training and support for effectively incorporating AI tools into their teaching practices and how to educate students about the ethical use of technology and the consequences of academic dishonesty, including the misuse of AI tools.
Students will receive artificial intelligence literacy instruction to support their development in AI tools.
In order to build foundational skills in writing and critical thinking, students under the age of 13 should not be encouraged to use generative artificial intelligence for academic support. Due to age restrictions, elementary, and middle school students should not be required or encouraged to use these tools outside of direct parent/guardian supervision.
AI detectors are deemed unreliable due to a variety of factors including, bias, complexity of language, data quality, and algorithmic errors, therefore, Comal ISD does not place reliance on their validity.
